Hokes Archives

Hey class,
So talking about the constructed image today got me thinking about one of my favorite artists, Beauvais Lyons. He's a printmaking professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, specializing in lithography (I would love to study with him, my printmaking prof last year showed his work to our class and I found it very inspiring). Here's a link to his website...http://web.utk.edu/~blyons/
The Hokes Archives is all fictional, Lyons made up all the history...it's really neat. His works are done in a scientific style and their creativity and detail just amaze me.
Enjoy!

I was going through photos in my phone and found some snapshots I took over the summer while working at a veterinary clinic. It's so odd being back at school and away from animals. Just wanted to share!

Ursus Wehrli
This guy takes wonderfully methodical pictures of every day objects or places and then spends a lot of time reorganizing them neatly. The OCD inside of me makes me love this guy's work. His website is in German so I send to you a site with the pictures, though still unfortunately not in English. Enjoy!

Connecting photography with Graphic narratives

Hi Guys,
So this quarter I am taking a class about Graphic Narratives for my arts of expression credit. I wanted to take it because I really don't know much about the genre, aside from comic strips and reading gags in the New Yorker, and the reading list for the class is pretty interesting. We've been talking a lot about how panels on a page relate to each other and different transition styles. It reminded me a lot of making diptychs and triptychs in photography. If the images don't relate, or at least make the suggestion that they do, then the viewer is often confused. We have the option of writing a 10pg graphic novel for our final, which l am very interested in doing. Just thinking about it is making me a little nuts though! I mean it's hard enough to choose 3 photos for a triptych, let alone draw 10 pages of individual panels that flow and create a story. Phew! Here's a page from one of the novel's we are reading now, Maus by Art Spiegelman (see top of page). I recommend the book!

Soft Spot
Soft-Spot is an artist and writer collective site, that features rotating online exhibitions pairing images and texts from different artists, as well as various other types of medias. While as photographers, we find it easier to express ourselves via images, writing is a very important aspect of photography, especially in the "Fine Art" world. Writing is a way to express your ideas and hone in to specifically what you're trying to say as an artist, and how you represent and view the world around you. Carrying a small notebook everyday will be a constant physical reminder of your thoughts. This will inevitably lead you to better process your own ideas and intentions not only to yourself, but to your peers and teachers. With these intentions in mind, Soft Spot strives to be a social platform that allows people to exhibit work, be exposed to new artists and take part in visual and verbal dialogue surrounding contemporary issues.
AND, they are always accepting submissions of work!
